Alice B. Restaurant and Gertie’s Salon & Bar

Once upon a time there lived two magnificent opposites: Alice B. Toklas, grounded, attentive, and quietly excellent, and Gertrude Stein, bold, provocative, and unapologetically unique. One created stability and care, the other disruption and momentum. Together, over a lifetime partnership lived out loud, they formed a singular force that nurtured free thinking, challenged conventions, and reshaped modern art and literature from the inside out.

Alice B. Restaurant is Toklas in spirit and soul: cozy but clever, familiar but surprising, gracious but never fussy. It’s a community restaurant where inspired food arrives without pretention, conversations come easy, and there’s zero judgment about ordering coffee and dessert.

Gertie’s Salon & Bar, Stein’s persona uncorked. Lively, opinionated, and reliably unpredictable, Gertie’s is a place where ideas collide, laughter ricochets, and strangers become chosen family somewhere between the first and second sip. Dedicated to a woman who gathered geniuses the way others collect postage stamps—Gertie’s is a clubhouse for us, the modern-day “Lost Generation.” It is a toast to the lifelong dance of Alice and Gertrude: two women who mothered 20th-century Modernism while proving that living out is the most magnificent art of all.

Pulling the strings behind this delicious mischief are James Beard Award–winning chefs Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken, whose culinary brilliance turns comfort into adventure and boldness into something irresistibly edible.

Like Alice and Gertrude themselves, Alice B. Restaurant and Gertie’s Salon and Bar are wonderfully different and completely inseparable. One fluffs the pillows and the other turns up the music. Together, they carry forward the joyful LGBTQ+ tradition of community bars and restaurants as sanctuaries, stages, and second living rooms—places where you’re fed, fortified, and freed to be exactly who you are.

So, come find your spark at Gertie’s. The conversation is just getting interesting!

“What is sauce for the goose may be sauce for the gander but is not necessarily sauce for the chicken, the duck, the turkey or the guinea hen.”
